It's The Most Wonderful Time of The Year - To Find a Job @ NZME

Contrary to popular belief, December is when many employers are making a list (of potential candidates) and checking it twice. These job-search tips could help your Christmas come early.

Many job seekers seem to take a break from their job search during the holiday season, with buying presents, attending Christmas parties and just getting distracted by all the general festivities going on. This leads to job hunting being put on the back burner.

Not only would it be great to tick off ‘find a new job’ on your New Year’s resolution list, but Employers would also benefit from the peace of mind that they’ll have with someone sitting behind that empty desk come January. If you’re still unsure if you should continue your job search over the holiday, here’s the top reasons that you should keep searching - especially at NZME!

Less Competition
There is a common misconception that companies don’t hire over the holiday season, so those seeking jobs will stop their hunting and those looking to change jobs will stay in their position until the New Year. Therefore, if you’re looking for a job in a competitive field, now would be the best time to get your application in. Come January everyone will be firing up to send out their CV’s so it’s best to be ahead of the competition and get in now if you can.

Business Continues
There’s no specific time of the year when companies hire. There’s always an empty seat that needs filled. Studies show that more people are hired in November & December rather than in January. In fact, 40,000 more people were hired in the US in December 2013 than in January 2014. Don’t think for a minute that companies aren’t hiring. Companies often like to hit the ground running in the New Year, which means they want staff in place and ready to start in January.

Networking Possibilities
There are so many social events happening over Christmas and the New Year period, so it’s the perfect time to brush up on your networking skills. Don’t be shy during November and December, this is the prime time to be connecting with people who are able to help you with your job hunt. During the season of giving, most people are happy to pay it forward and help you out. Consider getting business cards or keeping your YUDU profile printed out, and have a mini elevator pitch ready in case you need to share information on your background at the drop of a hat.

Temporary Holiday Positions Could Turn into Full Time Positions
Hospitality, tourism and retail jobs are at their peak during the Christmas holidays, with more workers needed. With many companies needing to hire temp workers, or even Christmas Casual workers over the silly season, you’re able to pick up on skills that you may be missing from your CV. You never know, your temp job could turn into your full-time role.

REMEMBER:
Look out for opportunities and be open minded about them as they could be just around the corner or pop up where you least expect it.
