Lee Miller: From Apprenticeship to Sales Operations Director

When did you join NZME and what was your first job? I initially joined the company straight out of school and did an 8000-hour printing apprenticeship in typography and design.
What other roles have you done along the way that lead you to where you are now? Typographer Cadetship – Journalism (London) Layout Sub Editor Systems Editor Production Editor Chief of Staff Deputy Managing Editor GM Media Services Sales Operations Director (Now)
How did you progress into new roles? I have always had fantastic managers. They taught me to try different roles within our business to ensure my knowledge is well-rounded, my experience relevant and that I have transportable skills.
Best part of your workday? I enjoy the big mind shift at the beginning of the day when my thinking moves from simply being a mum to the complex stuff that is required to get through a day at NZME.
Your office rocks because... Every time and for every office the answer is always going to be the people – for their passion, drive, smarts, hard work, and good deeds.
Why do you love NZME… Look how far we have come – I started in a newsroom with 200 men and 6 women - when I qualified I was a TradesMAN and the ladies bathroom was in another building. Now, we are leading the way in business with our Rainbow Tick, our NZME Kickstarters and our Diversity Committee – just to list a few...
Do you have any advice for people wanting to progress their career at NZME? Embrace change, try new things and take responsibility for driving your own development – don’t wait for someone to tap you on the shoulder.
